Why this book exists
For most of us, a German Shepherd is not a pet. They are the shadow at your feet, the one who knows your moods before you do, the heart of the house. This book began with a simple idea: that a dog like that deserves to be seen properly, once, by someone who knows how to look.
It is also a rescue story. Every owner who takes part makes a $100 donation, and 100% of it is delivered directly to German Shepherd Rescue Victoria, the volunteers who pull these dogs back from being surrendered, abandoned or left behind. Volume One raised more than $25,000 for them, and helped rehome shepherds who might not have had a second chance. Volume Two is how we do it again, with your dog on the page.
The person behind the camera
Simon Carroll has spent 46 years as a portrait and fine-art photographer, and has photographed more than 3,000 dogs. He is, first and last, a dog lover, and it shows in the work.
Every photograph is handcrafted and personally finished by Simon, on exquisite archival materials chosen to last for generations. Bespoke, one of a kind, and made for your dog alone. After 46 years he can see what makes your dog unmistakably themselves, the set of the ears, the look in the eye that is theirs and no one else's, and hold it in a portrait that still feels like them years from now.
A portrait worth keeping
The truth every German Shepherd owner knows, and tries not to dwell on, is that their years run faster than ours. A real portrait is how you hold on to the details: the exact tilt of the head, the soulful eyes, the gentle giant who filled your home.
So many owners from Volume One have told us the same thing, that the artwork on the wall brings their dog back into the room. That is what we are really making here.
How taking part works
It is a handful of gentle steps, and we attend to the rest. You register your dog and tell us their story. We meet at a relaxed Fur-Model Audition to get to know your dog and share the vision for the book. Then comes the portrait session itself, calm and on your dog's terms, followed by a private reveal of the finished photographs, with a $100 credit toward an heirloom artwork for your wall. The full walk-through lives on the register page.
In 46 years and many thousands of faces, the work has always come down to one promise: that you will love what you see. Every piece is made to delight you, and if it is not right, we make it right.
